2023 Award Winners
BERNARD AMOS DISTINGUISHED SCIENTIST AWARD
In recognition of the scientific contributions to the field of immunogenetics and transplantation immunology made by Dr. Bernard Amos, the “Distinguished Scientist Award” has been renamed the “Bernard Amos Distinguished Scientist Award”. This award was established in 2001 to honor a distinguished ASHI scientist, who like Dr. Amos, has made significant contributions to our field.
This year's recipient of the Bernard Amos Distinguished Scientist Award is Sebastiaan Heidt, PhD. He is Director of the Eurotransplant Reference Laboratory and Associate Professor at the Department of Immunology at the LUMC.

PAUL I. TERASAKI CLINICAL SCIENCE AWARD
The Paul I. Terasaki Clinical Science Award was established in 2003 to honor an individual, group, or institution in recognition of significant accomplishments and/or contributions to the fields of clinical transplantation, histocompatibility, and immunogenetics. This award was made possible by a grant from the Paul I. Terasaki Foundation.
The 2023 Paul I. Terasaki Clinical Science Awardee is Professor Carmen Lefaucheur, Head of the Department of Nephrology and Kidney Transplantation, Saint-Louis Hospital-APHP, Paris, France and Professor of Nephrology at Université Paris Cité, Medical Director of the Paris Institute for Transplantation & Organ Regeneration, Director of the Research FHU Apollo.

ROSE PAYNE AWARD
The Rose Payne Award was established in 1984 to honor a great scientist and to recognize her long-standing contributions to the field of immunogenetics and her support in the development of the Society.
The 2023 Rose Payne Awardee is Anat R. Tambur, DMD, PhD, D(ABHI), FAST, co-director of the Transplant Immunology Laboratory at Northwestern University, Chicago, IL, USA.

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD
The Distinguished Service Award was established in 1999 to honor colleagues who have contributed significantly ASHI’s heritage.
The 2023 Distinguished Service Awardee is John Schmitz, PhD, F(ACHI), Professor of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine and Microbiology/Immunology, UNC School of Medicine, Program Director of the Medical Laboratory Immunology Fellowship Training Program at UNC Medical Center.

OUTSTANDING TECHNOLOGIST AWARD
To honor outstanding technologists, past and present, the Outstanding Technologist Award is presented annually to a technologist who has provided outstanding contributions to the field of histocompatibility and immunogenetics.
The 2023 Outstanding Technologist Award is presented to Rachel Wahlert, MS, CHS (ACHI), Manager of the Histocompatibility Lab at Augusta University.

J. MARILYN MACQUEEN RISING STAR AWARD
The J. Marilyn MacQueen Rising Star Award honors Marilyn MacQueen who was a pioneer in the field of histocompatibility.
The 2023 J. Marilyn MacQueen Rising Star Award winner is Alphonce Kioko Mweleli, MSc, MLT, the quality officer in the HLA Laboratory at Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya.

EARLY CAREER INVESTIGATOR AWARD
The aim of the ASHI Early Career Investigator Award (ECIA) is to identify future research leaders who are committed to conducting impactful basic science research. This program offers ASHI members an award for research related to immunogenetics in various clinical disciplines such as transplantation, cancer, autoimmunity, infectious disease, disease association, or pharmacogenomics.
The 2023 ASHI Early Career Investigator Award winner is Esme Dijke, PhD, F(ACHI), University of Alberta Hospital.

INNOVATION SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
The goal of the Innovation Scholarship Award is to recognize and further a significant body of work in the fields of HLA, immunogenetics, and/or transplant immunology as demonstrated by publications, educational initiatives, and/or developed translational tools and analyses.
The winner of the 2023 Innovation Scholarship Award is Aleksandar Senev, MD, PhD, F(EBTI), Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

MICHAEL SCHMIEDERER RESEARCH SUPPORT AWARD
ASHI and LabCorp are pleased to announce the selection of Dr. Eszter Lazar-Molnar for the 2023 Michael Schmiederer Research Support Award! This award was created to support innovative and impactful research in histocompatibility and Immunogenetics, in honorific memory of Dr. Michael Schmiederer, PhD, S(ACHI).
The winner of the 2023 Michael Schmiederer Research Support Award is Eszter Lazar-Molnar, PhD, F(ACHI), D(ABMLI), University of Utah School of Medicine.
